Archdiocese of Detroit Auxiliary Bishop Earl Boyea of Detroit was introduced as bishop of Lansing today to a crowd that included media, church employees and clergy.Boyea, 56, was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as the fifth bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lansing, according to the diocese.
"He's a people person," said Bishop Carl Mengeling as he introduced Boyea. "He's got a sharp mind and a good sense of humor. He's gifted with high energy and enthusiasm."
Boyea, 56, said of Mengeling, who was bishop for 12 years, "He's a tough act to follow."Mengeling, 77, came to Lansing from Indiana and was ordained as bishop in January 1996.
He resigned in October 2005 when he turned 75, as Vatican policy requires.
The pope can accept or reject a bishop's resignation or, as in Mengeling's case, put it on hold.
Boyea will be installed as bishop on April 29.
Mengeling will be the administrator of the Lansing Diocese until then.
The 10-county Diocese of Lansing includes more than 200,000 Catholics.
