Concerns over anti discrimination changes

There's concern that Tasmania's anti-discrimination laws are to be watered down.

The Gay and Lesbian Rights Group is worried that a review of the Act will grant an exemption to Catholic schools, allowing them to give preference to children from Catholic families.

The Group's Rodney Croome says the State Government must rule out any exemptions from the Act.

"Our concern is that if church schools are exempt from the anti-discrimination act then they'll start turning away students for any number of reasons," Mr Croome said.

"For instance because they're parents aren't married or aren't regular church goers or because the students themselves are gay or in a sexual relationship or simply because they question church doctrine," he said.

The State Government is yet to respond.
