John Paul I Remembered

The 30th anniversary John Paul I’s papal election was marked this Tuesday with a Mass at the Church Canal Agordo in Belluno, Italy.

The Mass was presided by Cardinal Angelo Scola, patriarch of Venice, and concelebrated by the bishops of Triveneto.

On August 6 1978 Pope Paul VI died after fifteen years of pontificate.

On 26, the conclave of cardinals elected Pope Albino Luciani, cardinal of Venice, 66, who bears the name of John Paul I, combining those of his two well predecessors, John XXIII and Paul VI.

John Paul I spent only 33 days as Pope. He died on September 28.

A few days earlier, on August 13, at Il Mondo had expressed their interest in clarifying the Vatican finances.

His motto was Pontifical humilité (humility) which was reflected in their rejection to wear the papal tiara in the enthronement ceremony.

Albino Luciani was born on October 17 1912, in a small Italian town, Canale di Forno, the eldest of four children.

Within 10 years, and after having lived in poverty during World War I, his mother died. It was then his priestly vocation emerged.

He studied at Rome’s Gregorian University before a brief period as curate in his childhood parish.

In 1933 he joined the minor seminary in the town of Feltre, and then the major seminary of Belluno, where he was ordained in 1935.

On December 15 1958 he was appointed bishop of Vittorio Veneto. Then 12 days later he received the consecration of Episcopal hands of John XXIII in St Peter's Basilica.

On December 15, 1969 he was named Patriarch of Venice and created Cardinal by Pope Paul VI on March 5 1973.
