New bishop of Biloxi Diocese to be installed in April

Bishop Roger Morin of New Orleans has been named the bishop of the Biloxi Diocese that includes three Catholic churches in Hattiesburg.

The Vatican announced Monday that Morin, who turns 68 on Saturday, will be installed at a Mass at 2 p.m. April 27 at the Cathedral Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Biloxi.

Morin is the third bishop to serve the Biloxi diocese. He replaces former Bishop Thomas Rodi, who was installed as Archbishop of Mobile on June 6.

Morin will oversee the priests at the 53 parishes and missions including: Holy Rosary, Sacred Heart and St. Thomas Aquinas in Hattiesburg, Immaculate Conception in Laurel, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lumberton, Holy Trinity in Columbia, Holy Trinity Mission in Leakesville, St. Charles Borromeo in Picayune, St. Joseph Mission in Poplarville and St. Francis Xavier in Wiggins.

"I'm glad we have a bishop at last. We've been without one for about eight months, I believe," said the Rev. Bill Vollor at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Morin currently serves as vicar general, or second-in-command to Archbishop Alfred Hughes.

The Rev. Tommy Conway at St. Thomas said he has met Morin and feels he cares about the needs of priests. "It's a really exciting time to have a new person with new ideas and new enthusiasm to bring new life in many ways," he said.

In a prepared release on the diocese's Web site, Rodi said he is confident in Morin's ability to lead the diocese.
