Arch-abbot admits to child sex abuse and resigns

The head of a Salzburg monastery has admitted to sexually abusing a child decades ago and has resigned.

Arch-abbot Bruno Becker says he abused a 12-year-old boy more than 40 years ago.

In a statement cited Tuesday by the Austria Press Agency he says he informed church authorities last year after his victim contacted him.

Church authorities accepted his offer to resign.

Becker, 64, says he was not yet ordained when the abuse occurred and apologized to the victim last year.

The revelation comes amid a widening sexual abuse scandal involving the Roman Catholic Church in neighboring Germany.
