Call at funeral for end to violence

A PRIEST yesterday called for an end to the culture of violence and hatred that exists in parts of Limerick city.

Canon Donal McNamara made his comments as he addressed mourners at the funeral of Lee Slattery whose body was found in a shallow grave near Moyross on the outskirts of the city last Monday.

The 24-year-old father-of-one, who was from Ballynanty, died after he was shot a number of times last weekend. He was last seen alive shortly before midnight on May 27th and one line of enquiry being pursued by gardaí is that he was killed over a small drugs debt.

Hundreds of people, including Mayor of Limerick Cllr Kevin Kiely, attended yesterday’s funeral Mass which took place at St Munchin’s church in the city.

Canon McNamara told mourners: “Another family has yet again been left distraught, heartbroken and asking all kinds of questions like: Why us? Why now? Why Lee? And why in this barbaric way?”

Canon McNamara said Lee Slattery was a good man with a young family and he called for an end to the culture of violence and hatred in Limerick.
