Magdalene group requests inquiry

An application for a formal inquiry into the State’s obligation to provide redress to survivors of the Magdalene laundries has been submitted to the Irish Human Rights Commission.

The survivor advocacy group yesterday applied to the commission to conduct a formal inquiry into the State’s obligation to apologise to and provide redress for survivors of the laundries.

Justice for Magdalenes claims the request was made because of the repeated efforts by the Government to deny culpability for the abuse by religious orders, which took place in the laundries.
