A stylised WYD Cross enclosed in a heart, Brazil’s “Sugarloaf Mountain”, the yellow outline of a Brazilian coastline in the centre, the image of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Mountain, the symbol of Rio de Janeiro.
This is the logo that was presented by the World Youth Day organising committee.
The next WYD celebrations which will be attended by Benedict XVI, will take place in Rio between 23 and 28 July 2013, on the theme “Go and make disciples of all nations”.
The logo was created by Gustavo Huguenin, a 25 year old graphic designer from Cantagalo, a mountainous region in the State of Rio de Janeiro, who was the winner out of a pool of 200 participants.
The Religious Information Service (SIR) reported that Mgr. Orani Joao Tempesta, Bishop of Rio and President of the WYD 2013 Committee, presented him with the award before an audience of over 100 bishops and civil and political authorities, such as the governor of the State of Rio, Sergio Cabral.
In an interview published on the Archdiocese of Rio’s website, Huguenin, who is a member of a Catholic Charismatic Renewal Group, stated: “It brings me great happiness to know that my work will be used in the greatest Catholic event in the world, with our Holy Father, and that this image will be associated with the personal encounter the youth of the whole world will have with Jesus Christ during the WYD Rio2013.”
