Cardinal Bagnasco tells journalists not to give in to the dictatorship of opinions

The President of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, launched an appeal to communications operators this morning, urging them not to give in to a “dictatorship of opinions”.

He did so during mass in the Basilica of St. Mary Above Minerva, which he celebrated on the occasion of the World Day of Social Communications.

Cardinal Bagnasco explained that “it is not information that is the problem but the ability to grasp its sense. Thus, constant monitoring and critical judgement are vital.”

CEI’s President then expressed the hope that news services would be inspired “by love for the truth and respectful towards all.”

“These qualities - he added – are essential if communication is to truly serve the community.”

Numerous communications operators were present at the mass.

Among them was the director general of Italian television company RAI, Lorenza Lei, the director of TV2000, Dino Boffo and journalist Domenico Delle Foglie.
