British cardinal, Keith O’Brien, who was recently
implicated in a Church sex abuse scandal, will not be able to spend the
rest of his days in Scotland, as he had intended to do, but is being
forced to leave the UK.
According to Glasgow daily The Herald, Rome suggested the cardinal leave the country.
The newspaper quoted figures close to the cardinal as sources. Cardinal O’Brien was forced to resign and was banned from participating in the Conclave that voted Francis as Pope, after he admitted to “improper conduct” with priests in his former archdiocese.
Rome apparently told the cardinal to leave the country recently, in order to prevent him from bringing further scandal to the Catholic Church.
O’Brien’s plans had been quite different: after announcing his resignation, he wished to spend the rest of his life in a cottage owned by the Church, in East Scotland.
