Legionaries, at chapter general, split on calls for complete reform

http://www.eyeofthetiber.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Legionaries1.jpgThe general chapter of the Legion of Christ, which is now taking place in Rome, has seen considerable disagreement about the degree of reform that is needed in the troubled order, John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter writes.

In conversation with Legionaries who are taking part in the chapter, Allen discovered that the meeting has reached general agreement on the need for a more decentralized structure and greater transparency.

But Legionaries are split on whether they should jettison the way of life and the spiritual writings given to them by their founder, the late Father Marcial Maciel.

Although Maciel died in disgrace, some Legionaries remain committed to the vision the founder gave to the order.
