French chapel designed by famed modern architect vandalized

La chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut dessinée par l'architecte Le Corbusier, le 9 septembre 2011The chapel of Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp, a famous work of the twentieth-century architect Le Corbusier, was recently vandalized, according to French media reports.

The only stained-glass window signed by Le Corbusier was shattered: “they broke into a thousand pieces the only glazing signed by Le Corbusier,” said Ronchamp’s deputy mayor.

Consecrated in 1955, the chapel, originally designed as a site of pilgrimage, is now part of a monastery of Poor Clare nuns.
