French government postpones proposal to change family law

Following large pro-family protests in Paris and Lyon, the French government announced it would not submit family-law legislation to parliament in 2014, the Reuters news agency reported.

The decision came after Socialist lawmakers announced they would amend the proposed bill to “legalize assisted procreation for lesbian couples [and] surrogate motherhood for gay men who wanted children,” according to Reuters.

President François Hollande’s approval rating stands at 22%, and Reuters speculated that he made the decision not to submit the legislation because he wish to avoid alienating some voters.
