Deadly attack on French monastery fuels fears of new terrorism

An armed man attacked a monastery in southern France on November 24, killing a custodian and binding and gagging residents before he fled as police approached to rescue the residents.

The masked man, who has not been identified, was carrying a shotgun and a knife; the custodian died of stabbing wounds.

Police have not yet ascertained the motive for the attack, which took place in the village of Montferrier-sur-Lez.

But terrorism has not been excluded.

Police have arrested several terror suspects near Marseille, not far from the scene of the attack.
